Events

The UK group of AIPPI organises talks and research events concerning intellectual property throughout the year. Our events count for CPD under the Solicitors Regulation Authority, the Bar Standards Board and IPReg requirements.

Most events provide drinks afterwards and the opportunity to meet the speakers and other attendees.

Attendance at our events is free for members and new applicants for membership.

Study Questions Kick-Off Meeting 2024

AIPPI has now announced the Study Questions for its 2024 Congress and the UK group will be holding our kick-off meeting to discuss on Tuesday 20 February at the offices of Bird & Bird, starting at 6pm.

The topics (and AIPPI UK Council Members responsible for leading the questions) are:

• PATENTS: Harmonisation of disclosure requirements and consequences of non-compliance) (led by Dom Adair (Bristows) and Jan Vleck (Reddie & Grose));

• TRADE MARKS: Conflicts between composite trademarks including non-distinctive elements (led by Paul Harris (Dehns) and Trevor Cook (Bird & Bird));

• COPYRIGHT: Defence of parody in copyright (led by Richard Vary (Bird & Bird) and Toby Bond (Bird & Bird)); and

• GENERAL: Unjustified allegations of infringement of IP rights (led by Richard Miller KC (3 New Square) and Ed Cronan (11 South Square)).

The purpose of the kick-off meeting will be for the question leaders and group to discuss the main points that the question raises for UK practitioners, consider proposals for harmonisation and reform, and plan the further preparation of the UK response.

The meetings will take place in round-table hybrid format, with in-person attendance encouraged, scheduled to take place on Tuesday 20 February at the offices of Bird & Bird. There will be a separate meeting for each question, preceded by a plenary session for the purpose of introducing the questions. The event will start at 6pm and last for approximately 2 hours. Those interested in participating are requested to choose only one question.

Twenty places are available for each question on a first-come-first-served basis. If you cannot attend the meeting, but would like to participate in work on the questions, please contact secretary@aippi.org.uk.

Each launch meeting is free and is open to members and non-members. Continued involvement after that will be limited to members, or those with pending applications for membership.

AIPPI UK Annual Prize

Members (including new members) who were 35 or younger on 1 January 2024 and who participate in the preparation of the response to a Question are eligible for consideration for the annual AIPPI UK prize for the best contribution by an eligible member of the group. The overall winner will receive a £3,000 contribution towards the attendance of an in-person congress (this year in Hangzhou, China; next year in Yokohama, Japan) and up to three other contributors will have the chance to receive a “highly commended” prize of £300 in book tokens.
