The Power of Mediation – developments at WIPO and in the UK

Bird & Bird LLP 12 New Fetter Lane London EC4A 1JP
Speakers: Heike Wollgast, Mr Justice Meade and James Porter

Mediation has been in every litigator’s toolbox for many years, but are we using it enough?

Other jurisdictions regularly mandate mediation and recently the parties in a trade mark dispute were ordered to mediate in a Shorter Trials Scheme case before the UK High Court. “Experience shows that mediation is capable of cracking even the hardest nuts”, said Mr Justice Miles. The parties settled.

Meanwhile, successful results have come from WIPO’s work to support mediation of IP disputes at various courts around the world.

AIPPI UK is pleased to present this seminar with representatives from WIPO, the UK judiciary and the UK IPO, looking at the work being done by WIPO in this area, the latest judicial thinking on mediation of IP disputes in the UK, and plans to expand use of mediation at the UK IPO.

Speakers:

Heike Wollgast, Head – IP Disputes Section, WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Centre

Mr Justice Meade

James Porter, Chief Hearing Officer, UK IPO

Registration from 17:45 for 18:00 start, finishing at 19:30.
